The tomato growers in Florida have asked the FDA to state that their tomatoes are free of salmonella contamination.
The outbreak began last April and has sickened over a thousand people in more than half the states in the US. Though the FDA had blamed tomatoes they haven't been able to find the link or prove it. Now they are looking at Serrano and jalapenos peppers and cilantro.
So far, only 19 Florida counties have had their tomatoes cleared. That's only about 2/3's of Florida's tomato crops.
The FDA has said that they haven't yet ruled out the tomatoes. They stand firm with their decisions. Losses have been upwards of the hundreds of millions.
